They might complain, however, that they only way they get him to shut up is to put him to bed, because he won't calm down. He makes no transitions, no stage during which he's maybe a little more laid-back, more cautious, not so easily distracted. Not often, anyway.
That is, perhaps, why Justin finds it so transfixing when he catches Chris in one of his in-between stages. Sometimes, they'll watch baseball when there's nothing better to do, and nothing on TV, and Chris will lean his head back on the couch and watch the game through slitted eyes. The slightest disturbance - a sudden movement, an excited tone in the commentator's voice, anything - will jerk him awake, but if he's comfortable enough, he'll fall back into his trance.
Other times, they'll be coming back from a late concert, and Chris will jam himself between Justin and Joey in the limo. He'll rest his head on Justin's shoulder, pressing himself close against his side, and stare out the window with heavily-lidded eyes. His voice will be muted and slow, but his words coherent enough to prove he isn't yet asleep. He'll be shocked awake when Joey prods him in the ribs, and by the time Justin climbs out of the car after him, he'll be on again.
One of Justin's favorite times is when Chris will draw back the curtain of his bunk on the bus, and just lie down within. He'll be on his stomach, resting his head on the back of his hands, and he just looks half interestedly at whoever else happens to be in the bunk area. When it's Justin, Chris will catch him staring and give him a small, knowing smile that sends shivers throughout him. Sometimes, Chris just stares back, but other times he'll sit up, and quietly ask if Justin wants to come in. Most of the time, Justin will say yes, and crawl into Chris' bunk, and Chris will pull the curtain closed. Every time, Chris' mouth will find Justin's, and Chris will be on again.
It doesn't happen often, and as much as he likes seeing Chris in some kind of transition, Justin really prefers him when he's on.
